西藏地震:百余人遇难,救援仍在继续

##Tibet Earthquake: Hundreds Rescued, But Many Still Missing

A powerful earthquake struck southwestern Tibet on Tuesday, killing at least 126 people and injuring 188 others. While over 400 people have been rescued from the rubble, a significant number remain missing.

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit the town of Dingri, about 50 miles north of Mount Everest, causing widespread damage and triggering landslides up to 5.2 feet high. The tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

Rescue efforts are underway in frigid temperatures, with sub-zero conditions posing a serious threat to those trapped beneath the debris. Experts warn that survivors could succumb to hypothermia within hours if not rescued promptly. Chinese authorities have deployed over 1,800 emergency rescue personnel and 1,600 soldiers to the affected areas. Temporary shelters have been set up for displaced residents.

The earthquake has caused extensive damage in Dingri County, with an estimated 3,609 houses destroyed. The county, home to around 60,000 people, is located on the border between China and Nepal and serves as the traditional residence of the Panchen Lama, a high-ranking figure in Tibetan Buddhism.

Authorities have not yet released figures on the number of missing persons. In Nepal, an official reported that a school building near Mount Everest was destroyed, although no casualties were reported at the time.

The earthquake has prompted condolences from world leaders, including the Dalai Lama, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

This is the most severe earthquake to hit China since a magnitude 6.2 tremor in northwestern China in 2023, which killed at least 149 people. The region is prone to earthquakes due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
