The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that witnesses observed the siblings entering the water but never resurfacing. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene but sadly, both Kayden and Joycelyn were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The community rallied behind the grieving family, with Dryden Community Funeral Home covering the funeral expenses and a crowdfunding campaign raising over $4,600 CAD. The family plans to establish a foundation called "Water Wings" in their memory, aiming to provide water safety education to all school-aged children by age 10. They have also petitioned Ontario Premier Doug Ford to reinstate swimming lessons as part of the primary school curriculum.

Elva Reid, an Anishinaabe woman and former competitive swimmer herself, highlighted the importance of water safety education for children living in northern communities with limited access to swimming pools. "Water is unforgiving and merciless," she emphasized, raising concerns about the lack of swimming skills among teenagers aged 12-18.

Local business owner Daniel Dubois-Blair, also a father of three, offered support by sponsoring swimming lessons for underprivileged children in the community, acknowledging that access to such opportunities should be available to everyone. Mayor Jack Harrison expressed his condolences to the Grant family and commended the efforts of first responders during this heartbreaking event.
